Course Overview
The program covers a wide range of topics and is designed to assist employers and their staff gain the skills and knowledge necessary to keep abreast of developments in this important sector. It is run as a traineeship for new employees in the industry, or to enable existing workers gain formal qualifications across a broad cross-section of fruit, flower and vegetable specialisations.
Course Structure
AHC30620 Certificate III in Production Horticulture requires completion of 15 units of competency. The units below allow the specialisation in Group A (Horticulture)

 

Establish horticultural crops  (AHCPHT315)

Provide information on plants and their culture  (AHCPCM306)

Apply biosecurity measures  (AHCBI0303)

Comply with industry quality assurance requirements  (AHCWRK318)

Apply environmentally sustainable work practices  (AHCWRK320)

Contribute to work health and safety processes  (AHCWHS302)

Coordinate work site activities  (AHCWRK317)

Implement a plant nutrition program  (AHCPCM305)

Implement an integrated pest management program  (AHCPCM405)

Control weeds  (AHCPMG301)

Implement a propagation plan  (AHCNSY313)

Prepare specialised plants  (AHCNSY312)

Operate machinery and equipment   (AHCMOM304)

Harvest horticultural crops mechanically  (AHCPHT314)

Operate tractors  (AHCMOM202)

Some units have been clustered due to similarity in content.

Course Outcomes
  • Undertake soil or growing media sampling and interpret results as a foundation for further horticultural operations such as nutrition programs and irrigation scheduling.
  • Monitor and control the nutritional requirements of and applications to plants across a range of situations and environments.
  • Assess, plan and control weeds pests and diseases.
  • Coordinate crop harvesting activities.
  • Inspect and operate irrigation systems.
  • Transport, prepare and apply chemical
  • Understand and apply work health and safety policies and procedures
RPL and Credit Transfers
Students who believe they have sufficient past experience to demonstrate full competence against particular units may apply for RPL using the forms and processes available from TME, RPL cannot be completed as an apprentice. Students may apply for credit transfer for any units completed in prior qualifications, including for the elective units.
Introduction to the Course
Trainees will be introduced to the course, delivery and assessment methods, and expectations and rights of trainees on course commencement.

All trainees are expected to comply with worksite WHS procedures and policies during practical activities.
