This is an Australian accredited full qualification that can fit many production applications, but with specialisations and a particular focus on the production of Industrial Hemp. The course has been, developed with the assistance of Dr Mary Cole, a world-renowned specialist in soil biological systems in agriculture.
Industrial Hemp is an emerging agricultural industry with a positive future for farming diversity in the face of changing climate. While the structure of the units will remain aligned with the national competencies, learners will develop additional insights into the differences in Industrial Hemp production from other crops.
Industrial Hemp is a crop that ticks many boxes;
- It’s a crop that can be grown in all parts of Australia.
- It’s a low input crop that benefits the soil structure and biota.
- It has rapidly emerging innovative markets for its many applications.
- It is a superior carbon sequestrator.
- It is a versatile crop that can be wholly utilised, thus spreading market risk.
Products include hempcrete, an innovative cladding material for use in any country in new residential construction and retrofitting to improve thermal comfort, energy efficiency or acoustics.
The course provides understanding of scientific principles with the development of a wide range of skills. While the emphasis is on Industrial Hemp, the broad skills learned include the ability to positively identify a wide range of plants, pests, diseases, pathogens and disorders, the planting, pruning, propagation and maintenance of plants along with their establishment and management.
