This course is aligned to the national skill sets around Infection Control. The emphasis is on developing skills in staff to implement proper cleaning and infection control systems in workplaces.  This is critical to ensure the workplace does not become the source of new outbreaks.

Course Outcomes

Participants will learn how to;

  • Follow standard and additional precautions for infection prevention and control
  • Identify infection hazards and assess risks
  • Follow procedures for managing risks associated with specific hazards

Practical training will be contextualized to either the General skill set (applicable across most industries) or the 3 specific industry-focused areas;

  • Retail
  • Food Handling, and
  • Transport and Storage

Participants are encouraged to enrol in the skill area most aligned with their business area.

This course does require a reasonable level of English and the understanding of basic medical terminology. Contact us if you require clarification around this requirement.

 

Course outcomes:

Participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment to one of the following Skill Sets;

  • Infection Control Skill Sets HLTSS00064
  • Retail (Infection Control Skill Set HLTSS00065)
  • Food Handling (Infection control Skill Set HLTSS00066)
  • Transport and Logistic (Infection control Skill Set HLTSS00067)

Course structure:

Courses will be a mixture of the theory and understanding of infection control, plus some practical activities and practice of cleaning techniques in the workplace.  You will be expected to learn and demonstrate your ability to follow established organisation infection prevention and control procedures, including;

  • choice and use of personal protection equipment
  • respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
  • environmental cleaning
  • disposal of contaminated waste
  • managing risks associated with specific hazards
  • hand hygiene and care of hand
  • use of personal protective equipment
  • handling of waste
  • enforcing clean and contaminated zones
  • limitation of contamination
  • surface cleaning

More information:

Assessment:  This is a nationally recognised skill set, so participants will be required to undertake assessment during the program to demonstrate understanding of the knowledge and skills required to implement infection control procedures in their workplace.

This will comprise;

  • an Assessment Questionnaire to demonstrate that you understand what was taught during the day, and;
  • you demonstrating the techniques you will learn for cleaning, handling waste, etc.

Your assessor is looking for evidence that you are competent in the unit requirements.  To show that you are competent you must be able to:

  • Perform the task to workplace standards
  • Manage a range of different tasks
  • Respond to contingencies or breakdowns
  • Deal with the responsibilities of the workplace, including working with others.

 

What happens after I submit my assessment tasks?

Your trainer will examine your work and decide whether it meets the criteria. If so the work will be marked ‘competent’ and a Statement of Attainment issued.

If you are unable to demonstrate the required level of knowledge and skills through this assessment task on the first attempt your Trainer may choose to verbally assess you to gather further evidence of your knowledge of specific questions. In this situation your they will make note of this on your assessment task including notes on what answers you provided.
